Animation is a way wherein consecutive drawings, patterns or even puppets are photographed to produce a succession of illusions of movement. Since our eyes can only keep a picture around one/10 second, the brain mixes them into one moving image when many images come in rapid succession. The images are created or painted on clear celluloid sheets for photography in conventional animation. Early cartoons are instances of this, however nowadays most animated films are created using CGI or computer graphics.
The picture rate or number of successive images shown per second is important for the appearance of a smooth motion of these drawn, painted, or computer-generated images. Moving characters are normally filmed "on two," meaning that only one frame is displayed for two frames, a total of 12 drawings a second. It permits movement of 12 frames per second, but might seem choppy. In the film, the smooth motion is usually employed at a frame rate of 24 frames a second.
